One-Word Story
Collaborate on a spontaneous and often hilarious story by having each person contribute just one word at a time.
How to Play
- 1One person starts a story with a single word.
- 2Going around the circle, each person adds one word to the story.
- 3The story builds one word at a time, often with hilarious and unexpected results. Continue for as long as you like!
Facilitator Guide
Opening Script:
"Weâll build a story one word at a time. Keep it movingâno long pausesâand aim to make your teammate look good."
Closing Script:
"Great listening and timing! Notice how a clear theme or a gentle constraint makes the story land better next time."
Why This Works
It trains turn-taking, active listening, and collaborative creativity. The tight constraint reduces performance pressure while surfacing group humor and rapport.
Best For
- Creative warm-ups before brainstorming
- Small groups (3â8)
- Short energizers (5â10 minutes)
Important Notes
- Model work-appropriate language and themes.
- If the pace drags, add a light time limit (e.g., 1 second to respond).
- Invite a 'pass' if someone blanks to keep flow positive.
