How to Play

  1. 1One person starts a story with a single word.

  3. 3The story builds one word at a time, often with hilarious and unexpected results. Continue for as long as you like!

Facilitator Guide

Opening Script:

"We’ll build a story one word at a time. Keep it moving—no long pauses—and aim to make your teammate look good."

Closing Script:

"Great listening and timing! Notice how a clear theme or a gentle constraint makes the story land better next time."

Why This Works

It trains turn-taking, active listening, and collaborative creativity. The tight constraint reduces performance pressure while surfacing group humor and rapport.

Best For

  • Creative warm-ups before brainstorming
  • Small groups (3–8)
  • Short energizers (5–10 minutes)

Important Notes

  • Model work-appropriate language and themes.
  • If the pace drags, add a light time limit (e.g., 1 second to respond).
  • Invite a 'pass' if someone blanks to keep flow positive.
